The Roland Space Echo RE-201 is the model that comes to mind for most musicians. Its solid-state electronics were meticulously designed to minimize background noise. Additionally, its lengthy tape loop was more robust than the standard short loops, which were constantly under tension and wore out quickly. The tape loop freely unspooled into a chamber, shielded by a clear plastic cover for protection. Crucially, the tape halted when the bypass footswitch was engaged, significantly prolonging its lifespan.

The RE-201 was equipped with a record head, three distinct playback heads, and a motor with adjustable speed. Users could modify the delay time of the RE-201 by changing the tape speed with the Repeat Rate knob and choosing one or more playback heads with the 12-position Mode Selector.

Furthermore, the reverb function could be used independently of the delay. Musicians were able to craft multi-tap echo patterns by activating several heads. The RE-201 featured an integrated spring reverb and the capability to route the delayed signal back into the record head. Moreover, it could blend echo repeats with reverb, creating a sound with more depth than tape delay on its own.
