In 1969, Electro Harmonix introduced the first “Triangle” version of the iconic Big Muff distortion fuzz. Throughout the 1970s, several iterations were released, including the V2 "Rams Head" (1973) and V3 “Pi” (1977). However, production ceased in 1984 when Electro Harmonix filed for bankruptcy, leading to the Big Muff's disappearance for nearly a decade.

In the early 1990s, Mike Matthews noticed the rising value of vintage Electro Harmonix pedals. In 1991, he partnered with an ex-Soviet company in St. Petersburg to revive the Big Muff, creating the “Mike Matthews Red Army Overdrive” by Sovtek. This marked the first Russian-made Big Muff, produced in limited quantities from 1991 to 1992 and now regarded as one of the rarest versions.

While it shares some traits with the Sovtek “Civil War” version (late 1992), the Red Army offers a warmer, clearer, and more defined sound compared to later Soviet models. The Crimson is a replica of this historic pedal, allowing you to own a unique piece of fuzz history.
