Reverb Can: The Essential Component for Classic Spring Reverb Effects

Reverb Tanks

A reverb can (also known as a reverb tank) is a component in tube amplifiers used to produce the spring reverb effect, which creates a sense of space and depth in the sound. This effect simulates the natural sound reverberation in a large space, adding richness and ambience to the tone.

Reverb cans contain a set of springs inside, and when the signal from the amplifier hits the springs, it causes them to vibrate. These vibrations are then captured by a pickup and sent back to the amplifier, producing the characteristic "echo" sound.

Key Points:

  • Construction: Typically consists of a metal housing with springs inside, often with a magnet or transducer that picks up the vibrations.
  • Function: Creates a natural-sounding reverberation effect when integrated with an amplifier.
  • Applications: Found in many classic tube amplifiers, including those by Fender, Marshall, and others.

They come in different sizes and designs, with common types being 2-spring and 3-spring reverb tanks, depending on the amplifier model and desired sound.
